To install the Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ double click on the"Mac Install Me First" icon, and follow the prompts. The Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ files will be installed automatically.
Note: If you are installing to a drive with an existing copy of Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬, choose the same folder containing the old Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ folder and the Installer will automatically replace it with the newer version.
The Installer will create a folder named "Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬f" containing the Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬, the "Place Modules", "Scripts" and "Scripts Extras" folders and the Kudo¿ README file.
Note: The contents of the Scripts folder are put under the Scripts menu when you run the Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬. If you wish to use your own scripts within the Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬, simply drop them into the Scripts folder and then launch the application.
Opening a Catalog
To open an image catalog from the Finder, double-click it. Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will automatically launch. The catalog you selected will be opened in a new window.
You can have several catalogs open at once just as you can with some word processing or graphics applications. Once you are in Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬, simply choose "Open Catalog" from the "File" menu, and choose another catalog. You may also simply double-click a second catalog from the Finder without quitting Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬. Either way, each catalog you open will be displayed in its own window and you can use all of Kudo¿ Catalog Reader's¬ functions with each catalog.
The Catalog Window
The catalog window's features make image access even easier, it is the heart of Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬. It is from here that you find, preview, edit, copy, and drag-and-place your images.
Views in Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬
The catalog window has three View buttons, at the top left corner of the window. The View buttons allow you to instantly switch between the three view modes supported by Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬; Gallery view, List view and Small Gallery view.
The Gallery View
The Gallery view uses a grid style layout, showing several thumbnails at once, as well as their name, file type, and an icon for their creator. To reach the Gallery view, click the middle View button, or select "Gallery" from the "View" pull-down menu.
The Small Gallery View
The Small Gallery view allows more thumbnails to be displayed within the catalog window at once by reducing the size of each thumbnail to 25% of their normal size. Individual thumbnails' information is not displayed in this view. The function of this view is the same as that of the Gallery view.
List View
The List view uses a vertical layout, displaying each thumbnail with its corresponding Notes field. The Notes field contains textual information about each thumbnail. You may enter any Notes field by double-clicking on it, but any changes you make will not be saved. Once you are in a Notes field, you may scroll up and down by using the up and down arrow keys. Each Notes field may contain up to 1024 characters. The List view is also accessible through the "View" menu.
Use the Find button to search an open catalog for thumbnail records with specific characteristics. Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ provides fast searches allowing you to define up to three discrete attributes of a thumbnail to search. Choosing "Find" from the "Image" menu is another way of starting the search process. The catalog window changes to reflect the search results displaying only those thumbnails that match the search criteria. This does not alter the original catalog in any way. The non-matching thumbnails are simply hidden from view. To restore the original view, use the Find button to search for "Everything" or choose "Find All" from the "Image" menu.
When you select the Find feature, Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ displays a "Find in Space & Fractals" bar.
ÑThe name of the Kudo¿ catalog being searched is shown in the title bar of the Find dialogue, simplifying working with multiple catalogs open simultaneously.
ÑUse the first pull-down menu to tell Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ the thumbnail record characteristic it should search. You can search by name, notes, or location. You may also choose "Everything" which will restore all thumbnails to the catalog window. If you choose "Everything", you cannot choose other characteristics for the search.
ÑIf you select "Notes","Kind", or "Creator" in the first pull-down menu, a down-arrow icon will appear at the far right of the Find dialog. Opening this new menu will list predefined options for the text box appropriate to your selection. The Notes fields in the Find dialog box can provide useful clues. There are Keywords in the Notes field to assist in your search.
ÑUse the text box on the right to enter words or word fragments to search for.
Clicking on the "Options" button will expand the Find dialog enabling up to three search criteria to be defined and will also display two checkboxes. Use this function to narrow your search when you need to find specific images such as all files whose names contain "weasel" where their notes also contain "fractal" and are all of type "JFIF", a Mac JPEG format file.
With the checkboxes, searches may be expanded to all currently open catalogs and constrained to treating the entered text as whole words only rather than word fragments.
In summary, to expand or limit the search:
ÑClick once on the "Options" button in the Find dialog.
ÑClick the left hand checkbox to expand the search to encompass all currently open catalogs.
ÑClick on the right-hand "Whole Words Only" check box to limit the search to complete keywords.
ÑThe three search criteria are associated by a logical AND. The conditions must all be true for a thumbnail to be returned. If, in the above example, you had a JIFF image called "weasel" but its Notes field does not contain "fractal" it would not be found.
ÑSearches may be cancelled at any time by pressing Command-".".
Find All
The "Find All" command allows you to locate and display all of the thumbnails in the currently open catalog. This command is also used to return the view to the full catalog after its contents have been limited by a search for specific characteristics.
ÑChoose "Find All" from the "Image" menu.
ÑKudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will display all of the thumbnail images in the open catalog.
ÑYou can also use the Find button or the "Find" command in the "Image" menu and choose "Everything" as search criteria to return to the full catalog.
The Info button gives you quick and easy access to all of a thumbnail record's data.. This option tells you the file name, file size, data created, date last modified, location of the original file, any keywords attached to this thumbnail, the name of the application that created the original file, the file type, and the width and height measurements of the original. The units of the width and height measurements may be changed between pixels, picas, inches, and centimetres from a pull-down menu at the lower right of the Info box.
To display the Info box:
ÑSelect a thumbnail by single-clicking on it and click the Info button.
Ñ Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will display the thumbnail's information in a separate floating window.
Ñ Use the pull-down menu in the lower right corner of the Info window to select the units for the width and height measurements between pixels, picas, inches, and centimetres.
ÑYou can also choose "Get Info" from the "Image" menu after selecting a thumbnail in order to display the Info box.
ÑWith the Info box open, you can select other thumbnails to display their information in the open Info box.
ÑClose the window by clicking in the standard close box located in the upper left corner of the Info box.
The Exclusive Riffle¬ Feature
The Riffle option is a special feature of Kudo¿ products that lets you visually zoom through you catalog. If your can't remember the name of the file you need, or just want to review the images you have quickly use the Riffle¬ option to scan through your Kudo¿ catalog.
When you use the Riffle¬ option, you fly through the catalog glancing at each thumbnail. You control the Riffle¬ speed to spend more, or less time looking at each thumbnail. You can change the Riffle¬ direction quickly and easily if you pass the image you want. Once you see the thumbnail you want, release the mouse button and the Riffle¬ stops with the thumbnail image right in front of you.
Using the Riffle¬ Feature
The Catalog window displays the thumbnails in a gallery or list view. When using the Riffle¬ option to zip through a catalog, it displays the thumbnails one after another in the lower right thumbnail position at a speed you control.
To Riffle¬ through your catalog:
ÑClick and hold on the Riffle¬ control. You will see one thumbnail after another displayed in the lower right of the Catalog window.
ÑDrag the pointer towards the right end of the Riffle¬ control. The Riffling speed increases up to the limits of your machine.
ÑNow drag the pointer towards the left. The Riffling slows, stops, and then reverses direction moving faster and faster to the top of the catalog.
ÑDrag the pointer to the center of the Riffle control. A thumbnail is shown in the lower right position and the Riffling stops.
ÑDrag the pointer to the right again until you see the thumbnail you want. Release the mouse button, the thumbnail you chose will be highlighted in the Catalog window and the Riffling will stop.
ÑSince your reactions are slower than Kudo¿ Catalog Reader's¬, when you release the mouse button you may get an image a few frames away from the thumbnail you wanted.
Displaying the Original Image
The thumbnails in the Catalog window are linked to the original images they were rendered from. While in Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬, use the Display Original feature to quickly and easily preview your images in a full-size window.
To display the original image of a thumbnail:
ÑSelect the thumbnail you wish to view by clicking on it. Choose "Display Original" from the "Image" menu. Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will follow its link to the original image, and then display it in a new full-size window.
ÑTo display another image click once on any thumbnail. The thumbnail's original image will replace the previous one resizing the Display original window to fit the new image.
ÑUse the standard Close box to close the Display original window.
Ñ Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ cannot display original images stored on disks which are not mounted. If the image is on such an off-line disk, you will be prompted to insert the required disk.
Reveal Original
The "Reveal Original" option, chosen from the "Image" menu, opens the folder which contains the original image file the currently selected thumbnail was rendered from. This function is similar to the "Find File" command in the Finder.
To find the original image: select a thumbnail from the Catalog window.
ÑChoose "Reveal Original" from the "Image" menu. Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will automatically open the folder that contains the original image and the image file will be highlighted.
ÑIf the original image is on a disk that is not on-line, Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will prompt you to insert the required disk. After the disk is mounted, the function will continue normally.
Edit Original
Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ maintains a link between the thumbnail and the original image and can launch the application that created the image, loading the original image for editing automatically.
ÑChoose the file you wish to open.
ÑSelect "Edit original" from the "Image" menu and the appropriate application will launch the selected image.
ÑFrom Gallery or List View you can double-click the "Creator" icon to launch the file's creator and open the original image in a new window automatically.
Drag and Place
Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ supports our Drag and Place architecture, a first-of-its-kind technology which allows you to simply drag images from a Kudo¿ catalog directly into open windows in PageMaker¿, QuarkXPress¬, Fractal Design Painter, Adobe Freehand¬, Adobe Illustrator¿, Adobe Premiere¿, or Adobe Photoshop¬. The list of Place Modules is always being added to, so please check the included Read Me file for updates. Keep in mind, however, the file being placed must be of a format supported by the application you are placing the image into.
Use the Drag and Place feature to save time getting your images into publication. By the single-step Drag and Place, Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ simply inserts a file reference into the target document eliminating the need for a copy of your image file.
To Drag and Place images:
ÑOpen the application and create a new document or open an existing one.
ÑWith the document open, switch to the Finder and open the Kudo¿ catalog containing the image you want to place. Make sure to adjust your view so the document window you wish to place into is visible while you are still in the Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬.
ÑSelect the thumbnail and click and drag it to the open document.
ÑLet go of the mouse button, and Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will automatically find the original image of the thumbnail and place it into the open document.
ÑUsing Drag and Place to place an image into Photoshop¬, Illustrator¿, Painter¿, ClarisWorks¿, Premier¿ and Freehand¬, placing an image will result in the image appearing in a new window rather than the open document. QuarkXPress¬ and Pagmaker¿ allow image placement into preselected frames. In PageMaker¿ the image will appear as a new object in the document.
More Place
You can also place your images into supported applications using the Place menu. PageMaker¿, QuarkXPress¬, and other major applications accept images using Place from Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬.
To place an image file using the Place menu:
ÑSelect the thumbnail you want placed into an open application by single-clicking on it from the Catalog window.
ÑChoose the application to place the original image into from the list in the "Place" submenu of the menu.
Ñ Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ will then automatically place the selected image into an open document in the target application.
ÑIf the desired application does not appear in the "Place" submenu, make sure that the application to place into is open in the background and try again.
Using Copy and Paste
If your target application does not support Drag and Place, you can still transfer the image using Copy and Paste.
ÑSelect the thumbnail you wish to transfer by single-clicking it in the Catalog window.
ÑChoose "Copy" from the "Edit" menu. The original image file will be copied to the system clipboard, provided you have enough free RAM.
ÑOpen the document you wish to copy the image to.
ÑChoose "Paste" from the "Edit" menu, while you are in the target application. The image file will then be copied from the clipboard into your document.
ÑNote: If there is not enough free RAM available for the Clipboard to store the entire image during the transfer, the image will not be copied correctly. Quit extraneous programs in order to free up more RAM and try the transfer again.
Printing Your Catalog
To print all the thumbnail records in your catalog, select the standard "Page Setup" command from the "File" menu to set up your printer and choose "Print Catalog". All thumbnail records in the currently found set of the open window will be printed.
You can only print thumbnails from Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬. If you wish to print your original images, you must first place them into another application.
Sorting Your Catalog
When you first open a Kudo¿ catalog, Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ sorts the images in the order they were added to the catalog. Use the Sort menu to resort them by any of seven discrete characteristics. For example, you can sort by "Modification Date" to see which images have been updated most recently, or by "Kind" to group your images by their file type.
The Sort menu allows you to sort by the same criteria used in the Find feature, but the Sort and Find features affect the open catalog differently. With Find, Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ narrows the range of thumbnails you see allowing you to find the one you need at a given moment quickly and easily. Sorting leaves the whole catalog visible letting you browse through organised images at your leisure and reorganise them as need be. Neither Sorting nor Finding permanently affects the Kudo¿ catalog.
To sort your catalog select a sorting method from the Sort menu. The catalog found set will be sorted.
Exporting Text from a Kudo¿ Catalog
The "Export Text" command, found in the "File" menu, allows you to create a tab delimited text file suitable for importing into database applications. This file contains pertinent catalog information including the filename, size, creation date, modification date, file location, and the type of each image file. To use this feature choose "Export Text" from the "File" menu. The scripts menu also has several scripts that assist text import/export.
The Color Palette
The "Color Palette" submenu, opened from the "File" menu, allows you to select the color palette when displaying an original image. This can make a difference in image quality, especially on 256-color displays. Choosing "System" will make each image use the System's 256-color palette, in place of its own. If you choose "Image Specific", then the System palette will change to match the specific image colors of each image opened.
The Scripts Menu
Kudo¿ Catalog Reader¬ is a fully scriptable application and includes several premade scripts found in the "Scripts" folder. The "Read Me" file, also in your "Scripts" folder includes detailed information on all included scripts as well as update information. To use a Kudo¿ script, select it from the Scripts menu and release the mouse button.
